Lyman Briggs Alumni Association
A Note from the
LBAA Co-Chairs
Diane Barker '79
Nick White '93
As we look to the past year and towards the new year, we are very excited for Lyman Briggs College. Last year was marked by three wonderful events: re-gaining college status, the appointment of Dr.
Simmons as our dean and our 40th anniversary. The 40th celebration was a wonderful opportunity to look back at Briggs’ history and hear alumni share personal stories from across the years. It has been heart warming to see how broadly Briggs has positively impacted people and that the Briggs alumni family is made up of graduated students and many more. Former Briggs faculty, staff, students who spent some time in Briggs and former Holmes Hall staff are continuing to contribute to the Briggs community. It is through the efforts of so many wonderful people that LBC will continue to be a living-learning community that touches so many lives. As we move forward in the new year we are excited to be working with the LBC family and LBC’s new Director of Development & Alumni Relations, Dan J. McKean.
LBC Nominates Alumni for the
MSU Distinguished Alumni Award
Dean Elizabeth Simmons is proud to announce that Lyman Briggs College has nominated two alumni for the MSUAA 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award.
This award is given annually to alumni who have distinguished themselves by obtaining the highest level of professional accomplishments and who possess the highest standards of integrity and character to positively reflect and enhance the prestige of Michigan State University. Award winners are honored at the Grand Awards ceremony that will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008.
Jay (John) A. Pendergrass ('76, environmental science)
John (Jay) is well known in
environmental circles as the Director of ELI’s
State Center and as a regular columnist in our
Environmental Forum. But he is equally well known
for spearheading the implementation of “long-term
stewardship” and “institutional controls” on toxic
waste sites.
Dr. Michael J. VanRooyen ('84, biology)
Michael is helping to eliminate the disconnect between academic institutions and organizations that provide humanitarian assistance. In 2004, VanRooyen joined Harvard University and co-founded the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. As a researcher he has focused on public health operations in complex humanitarian emergencies and war.
