Nominees must demonstrate an exemplary level of academic achievement in the completion of a rigorous course of study, as well as intellectual involvement within their chosen major or field of concentration, and a concern for the human aspects of their field of study.

The Sean Healey Memorial Award-2007-08

Sean Healey was a Lyman Briggs School computer science major that died in 1992 after his sophomore year as the result of complications of muscular dystrophy. Sean was a gifted writer and avid reader, someone who was never without a book in his hand. Therefore, through the generosity of his parents, Diana and Patrick Healey, Lyman Briggs School has established the Sean Healey Memorial Award for Honors Writing. This award is to be given each semester to an LBS student whose work reflects the engagement, intelligence, and skills Sean displayed in his own first-year writings.

**Pamela Ann Merry Endowed Scholarship-2008

This award is intended to encourage students who have the demonstrated capacity to achieve educational and professional goals, the motivation to achieve these goals, and the initiative to seek opportunities to further their progress. Up to $1000.00 will be awarded to provide funds for tuition, books or supplies as needed.

Dr. Howard and Joan Hagerman Endowed Scholarship-2008

This scholarship is available to LBS Biology majors with a preference given to those who intend to teach. Up to $500.00 will be awarded on the basis of scholastic standing, grade point average, financial need, and recommendations from professors who know the student's work and potential. The award provides funds for tuition, books or supplies as needed.

Brian Falzon Book Scholarship

The Brian Falzon Book Scholarship was established by Brian's parents in his memory to assist and encourage Lyman Briggs students who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals. It provides the awardee with up to $300 for the purchase of course-related books.

Goldwater Scholarships

Goldwater Scholarships go to sophomores and juniors who are planning graduate study and research careers in science, engineering, or mathematics. Each university may nominate no more than four students. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,310 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The one- and two-year scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established in 1986 to honor former Sen. Barry M. Goldwater. Scholarships are designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.

This scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in the sciences, math and engineering. Congratulations!

Dr. Leroy Augenstein Memorial Scholarship

As the first Chairperson of Biophysics at Michigan State University, Dr. Leroy Augenstein developed the department to international recognition. A brilliant biophysicist, Dr. Augenstein devoted his life to attempt to bridge the gap between religion, science, and politics. The Augenstein Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Augenstein, to benefit worthy and capable students at Michigan State University, College of Natural Science.

Lumsden-Valrance Scholarship

Through the generosity of James (Chemistry '44) and Jean (Arts and Letters '44) Valrance, this endowed scholarship provides two full-tuition scholarships for students in their junior year who are interested in the study of science at Michigan State University. Both graduates of MSU, James and Jean share fond memories of MSU and appreciate the quality education the College of Natural Science provides. Richard J. Benefiel Endowed Scholarship

Through the generosity of Richard (Geological Sciences '52) and Joyce Benefiel, this scholarship has been created to encourage graduates of the Benton Harbor Public School system to attend Michigan State University. Preference is given to students planning to major in the Sciences (especially Physics and Astronomy, and Mathematics) or have an interested in pre-nursing.

Through the generosity of Thomas (Chemistry M 's64 & Ph.D. '71) and Mary (*Arts & Letters '65) Krigas, this endowed scholarship was created to assist students who have demonstrated the capacity to excel academically and who are clearly focused on a professional goal. This scholarship shall be awarded to one junior student in the College of Natural Science whose academic goals demonstrate an understanding of the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Elsie M. Jackson Endowed Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established by Jean Jackson Robinson in memory of her mother, Elsie M. Jackson. Elsie Jackson was a school teacher who promoted the importance of education to her students and her daughters. This scholarship is intended to benefit worthy and capable students from St. Clair County enrolled at MSU in the physical, chemical or biological sciences through the College of Natural Science.

MSU Trustee GPA Award Recipients for 2008

The MSU Board of Trustees' awards are granted at each commencement to graduates having the highest scholastic averages at the close of their last semester of attendance. The following Lyman Briggs Students received this award for 2004 for perfect 4.0 gpa's.

Kurtis L. Geerlings of Zeeland, a physics major in the Lyman Briggs School of Science in the College of Natural Science and a member of the Honors College. Married to Heidi Geerlings, he is the son of Steve and Dawn Geerlings and is a 2004 graduate of Zeeland High School.

Kathryn L. Fletcher of Ypsilanti, a human biology major in the Lyman Briggs School of Science in the College of Natural Science and a member of the Honors College. The daughter of Roger and Kristie Fletcher, she is a 2004 graduate of Tecumseh High School.

The MSU Community Club (MSUCC) Endowed Scholarship Fund

Scholarships for MSU students are a key component of the MSU Community Club organization. "Taste of the Town", garage & yard sales, group donations (including those from interest groups), and individual donations add to this fund making it possible for us to continue giving scholarships to deserving Michigan State University students.

Douglas Darden is in Lyman Briggs College, majoring in Human Biology. He is from Ada, MI and his current GPA is 3.95. He volunteers in the Out-Patient Oncology Unit at Sparrow Hospital and at the Surgical Unit at Ingham Hospital. He has recently been accepted to the 6-week long "History of Health Care and Medical Ethics" study abroad program in London, England this summer. Following graduation he hopes to be accepted into the College of Human Medicine at MSU to pursue his goal of becoming a doctor.

Peter Weiss is in the College of Lyman Briggs, a good choice, he feels, to explore science careers in order to choose the area best for him. He is from Lansing, MI and his current GPA is 3.89. At present he is working under Dr. Dodgson in a poultry genetics laboratory, working with Marek's Disease virus in chickens. He also volunteers with a ministry that is involved state-wide. Following graduation he plans to attend grad school with a goal of working in the field of human diabetes or oncogenic matters.

Smith River Farms Scholarship

Aaron Balowski has won a Smith River Farms Scholarship for 2008-2009. The Smith River Farms Scholarships were established by Ruth Smith-Eppelheimer as a memorial to her husband Robert and sons Douglas and Dean.

The Potchen Family Award

Anthony Rademacher was selected by Lyman Briggs College to receive the Potchen family award this year for his contributions as an emerging leader in Lyman Briggs College.
